Cornwall's Spring Story

The Nare's relationship with Great Gardens of Cornwall stems from the significance of the magnificent magnolias found across many of its member gardens. Founded by proprietor Toby Ashworth, The Spring Story follows six champion Magnolia campbellii trees in six of Cornwall's great gardens, with their blooms monitored each year to prove that spring really does arrive in Cornwall first, thanks to its unique subtropical climate.

Once each magnolia reaches 50 blooms, spring is officially declared in England.

February and March are the best time to visit to see the stunning displays of magnolias, some of which are as large as dinner plates. The bright colours of the camellias add to the wonderful pink displays during these early months of spring. April and May brings spring bulbs, rhododendrons and azaleas, whilst June and July sees spectacular displays of hydrangeas, agapanthus and summer plantings.
